Weed Composition in Hungarian Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth.) Seed Production: Could Tine Harrow Take over Chemical Management?

چکیده

Phacelia tanacetifolia, an excellent cover, green manure and honey crop is now widely cultivated throughout the world. One of its principal European seed production regions north-western Hungary, where recent withdrawal a potent herbicide, linuron, created new challenge for many growers. The goal this study to identify main factors determining weed species composition in phacelia fields region assess efficiency tine harrow clopyralid herbicide reducing abundance biomass. We carried out series surveys across following two-level design: (i) we estimated cover all 205 (broad-scale survey, BS); (ii) 22 these fields, provided more precise biomass measurements (counting individuals measuring dry weights species) microplots samples (fine-scale survey; FS). To characterize 34 background variables were also collected studied fields. In both investigations, Chenopodium album was by far most abundant weed. Within BS, using minimal adequate model containing 11 terms with significant net effects, 20.93% total variation data could be explained. determined environmental (soil pH, clay K; precipitation temperature), non-chemical management (crop preceding crop, irrigation tillage system) herbicides (linuron clopyralid). Variation partitioning demonstrated dominance cultural components shaping composition. Although effect mechanical treatments likely masked BS soil properties, our FS suggests that efficiently decrease number weeds can useful tool future.

Assessing pollinators’ use of floral resource subsidies in agri-environment schemes: An illustration using Phacelia tanacetifolia and honeybees

BACKGROUND Honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) are frequently used in agriculture for pollination services because of their abundance, generalist floral preferences, ease of management and hive transport. However, their populations are declining in many countries. Agri-Environment Schemes (AES) are being implemented in agricultural systems to combat the decline in populations of pollinators and other...

Novel microsatellite development and characterization for Phacelia formosula (Hydrophyllaceae)1

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Microsatellite primers were developed to characterize genetic diversity and structuring in the genus Phacelia (Hydrophyllaceae) and to further conservation efforts for P. formosula. METHODS AND RESULTS Fifteen novel microsatellite primers were developed for P. formosula. These were characterized for genetic variation in three separate P. formosula populations. Two to nine...

Individual and interactive effects of crop type and management on weed and seed bank composition in an organic rotation

We investigated the effects of organic and conventional pest and fertility management on weed cover and the seed bank community in an organic rotation. The study was conducted during the 4th and 5th years of an organic rotation on part of a long term organic-conventional comparison trial. Results showed that although crop type (potato vs. cabbage) in a single year significantly affected wee...
